Planning Malta and Gozo
Malta looks small, but Valletta’s walled streets and Gozo’s villages make very different days. One centres on a cathedral, lanes and harbour views; the other moves more slowly between citadel, villages and coast. Combining them means giving the island crossing a real place in the holiday.
For four days, Valletta and a few selected surrounding areas make a good start. If Gozo is a priority, one or two nights there can be easier than trying to complete it on a day trip. Decide what matters before fitting beach time, history and a boat outing into the same day.
Malta travel essentials
Schengen and travel documents
Check Malta’s Schengen entry conditions for your passport and residence status. Gozo is part of Malta; a ferry booking does not replace the documents needed for your flight.
Euros and card payments
Malta uses the euro. Keep cash for small village businesses and budget separately for accommodation taxes, boat trips and transport.
Buses and ferries
Check Malta Public Transport and ferry operator schedules. Traffic and connections can lengthen short distances; many Gozo bus journeys connect through Victoria.
Left-side traffic and sea conditions
Traffic drives on the left. Assess narrow roads, parking and insurance before renting; check waves and exit points at rocky swimming spots and allow for weather-related ferry changes.
5–7 days
First Valletta and Gozo trip
Three nights in Valletta, then two or three on Gozo. Add half a day for the Three Cities, with Victoria and Dwejra on separate Gozo days.
3–4 days
A slower Gozo stay
Base near Victoria and separate temple, village and coastal days. Group nearby stops instead of crossing the whole island repeatedly.
Malta city and island guides
Valletta is compact but rich in museums and harbour links. Gozo is an island, not a single city: Victoria, villages, temples and coastal sites require travel between them.
