Planning a Bulgaria itinerary

Bulgaria offers different trips through Sofia’s understated centre, Plovdiv’s historic houses and Varna’s park beside the sea. All three can be rewarding, but Sofia and Plovdiv make a strong starting point for a shorter visit. Add the coast when you can also give it travel and overnight time.

Balance museums and history with a mountain or beach day, allowing for its separate travel needs. Staying overnight gives you an evening in a place rather than another same-day return journey. Leave room for unfamiliar dishes at the table and unstructured walks between the formal visits.

Bulgaria travel essentials

Euro payments in 2026

Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. Older lev-denominated guide prices are outdated; carry a small cash backup alongside your bank card.

Entry and visas

Check Schengen entry requirements for your nationality and documents. Confirm visa validity, permitted stay and re-entry rights with official consular sources.

Compare trains and buses

Check stations, transfers and journey duration with BDZ for trains. For buses, include travel to and from the correct terminal when comparing prices.

From cities to nature

Vitosha walks and Black Sea beaches need different preparation from city sightseeing. Check conditions, trail information and beach flags, and plan your return transport.

4–6 days

Sofia and Plovdiv culture trip

Combine Sofia’s landmarks and museums with Plovdiv’s Old Town and Kapana. Leave a flexible afternoon for travelling between them.

From culture to the Black Sea

Count the longer eastbound transfer as its own day. Give Varna three days for archaeology, the Sea Garden and the coast.

Cities to visit in Bulgaria

Sofia and Plovdiv work well as a short culture trip. Varna is a separate Black Sea leg in the east: allow at least three nights rather than squeezing it into a weekend.
