How to plan a route through the Czech Republic
On a first trip, give Prague four to five nights and add Kutná Hora by train; then stay two to three nights in either Český Krumlov or Brno. Karlovy Vary and Plzeň are on the western axis, Olomouc and Brno on the eastern. Rather than using up the whole country in star-shaped day trips from Prague, set up two bases.
Domestic trains are strong, but tickets from České dráhy, RegioJet and Leo Express are not always valid on each other's services. On Bohemian Switzerland, castle and spa days, the last bus and seasonal closures are decisive. Use door-to-door times and a return buffer for every route.
What to know before travelling to the Czech Republic
Check whether your passport needs a Schengen visa
Czechia is in the Schengen Area; whether you need a visa for short stays depends on your nationality and passport type. If you do, apply only through the authorised visa centre according to the main-destination rule and confirm your personal passport conditions with current official sources.
The Czech koruna is used, not the euro
Cards are common, but CZK cash is useful at markets and in small towns. Acceptance of euros doesn't mean a good rate. At independent ATMs and exchange offices, look at the total commission; decline dynamic currency conversion and choose CZK on the terminal.
Check the operator and ticket coverage
České dráhy is the backbone of the national network; private trains and city transport use separate products. A Prague ticket may not automatically be valid on national trains, nor one rail operator's ticket on another's. Save the correct station name and last connection offline.
Plan health and transport around spa, beer and vineyard experiences
Consult your doctor before using spa water as medical treatment. Don't drive or cycle after a brewery or Moravian wine tasting. Read the tour's portion sizes, age, language and return conditions when booking.
The national park's daily closures override your route
In Bohemian Switzerland, fire, rockfall, flooding or maintenance can close gorges and trails. Follow the park's current notices, not an old blog route; don't light fires and don't enter closed areas.
8–10 days
A first trip to the Czech Republic
Prague five, Krumlov two nights; add Kutná Hora as a full day by train with the right station plan.
6–8 days
A Moravian culture route
Brno three to four, Olomouc two to three nights; choose Mikulov or the Moravian Karst as a single extra day.
5–7 days
West Bohemia
Industry and architecture in Plzeň, spa and forest in Karlovy Vary; two separate bases with train/bus connections.
4–6 days
A sandstone nature leg
Choose the Děčín/Hřensko or Jetřichovice sub-region; leave a city backup for park closures and bad weather.
Practical information for Czechia
Entry requirements
Whether you need a Schengen visa for Czechia depends on your nationality: many passports allow short visa-free stays of up to 90 days in any 180, while others need a visa from the authorised visa centre of the main destination. The EES keeps a biometric entry–exit record at the external border, and ETIAS doesn't replace a visa.
Money and payments
The Czech koruna is used. Cards are common in cities, but a little CZK is useful for markets, small towns, rural buses and tips. Euro prices are often converted at an unfavourable rate; use bank ATMs, check the total commission on screen and choose CZK on the terminal.
Languages
Czech is the official language; English is more common in Prague and tourist centres. Saving names such as Český Krumlov, Plzeň and Kutná Hora in their local spelling makes platform and stop displays easier to read. Slovak may be understood, but rather than treating the two languages as the same, use a few short Czech phrases.
Phones, internet and apps
České dráhy covers a large share of the country's trains, and PID Lítačka helps with planning in and around Prague; RegioJet and Leo Express are separate operators. Don't assume one ticket is valid across all operators. For rock parks, rural castles and spa days, save the last bus, trail closures and an offline map in advance.
Budget
Don't assume accommodation in central Prague and small towns is priced the same; price trains, spas, castles and brewery tours as separate current items.
On a budget plan, think guesthouses/hostels, daily menus, regional trains and free walks around the centre; mid-range brings central rooms, two museums and a castle/spa experience; a comfortable plan features boutique hotels, good restaurants and private transfers. Accommodation on Prague weekends and during Karlovy Vary events can exceed the national average.
Cities and nature routes to visit in the Czech Republic
The places to visit in the Czech Republic go far beyond Prague's towers. Český Krumlov opens up South Bohemia's castle-and-river landscape, Brno modern architecture and Moravian vineyards, and Karlovy Vary spa heritage. Kutná Hora offers silver and Gothic history, Olomouc a Baroque–university identity and Plzeň industrial and beer culture. Bohemian Switzerland adds a strong nature leg to a city route with its gorges and sandstone trails.
