How to plan a trip to Trabzon
The city of Trabzon, the Maçka valley and the highland routes are separate days. Going to Uzungöl and back isn't 'seeing the Black Sea'; a misty lake, Sumela and a coastal city are different experiences.
The weather is the boss of your plan. On the same day, the pastures can be foggy while the coast is clear; keep your scenery day flexible and a museum/city day in reserve.
Things to do in Trabzon
Central Trabzon
Link Hagia Sophia, the Atatürk Pavilion, Ortahisar and the bazaar according to your interests. Check restoration/current opening for the pavilion and museums.
Sumela and Maçka
Access to the monastery can change because of shuttles, walking routes and rock safety. Check the official site notice on the same day; carry non-slip shoes in Altındere.
Uzungöl and the highland pastures
Get to Uzungöl early; the lakeside is commercial and crowded. Don't chain pastures such as Hıdırnebi, Çal and Sultan Murat in a single day; they require road/weather experience.
Area by area: where to go
Meydan suits transport and food; Ortahisar history; Boztepe views but a hill; Akçaabat köfte and the western route; and Maçka is the base for Sumela.
Where to stay in Trabzon
On a first visit, the Meydan area is practical without a car. If you'll be visiting the pastures by car, a hotel with parking; in Uzungöl, check access and heating rather than just the stream/lake view.
What to eat in Trabzon
The naming of kuymak/mıhlama is a regional debate; the balance of cheese, cornmeal and butter is what matters. Try Akçaabat köfte, hamsi pilaf, black cabbage soup/sarma, Vakfıkebir bread and Laz böreği.
Hamsi (anchovy) is seasonal; don't mistake frozen fish on a summer menu for the seasonal classic. At a highland breakfast, ask about portions/waste.
Getting to and around Trabzon
TZX airport is close to the city centre; there are municipal/Havaş/taxi options. Rize-Artvin Airport can be an alternative on an eastern route; choose between the two airports according to your route's direction.
The centre by dolmuş/bus and on foot; Sumela, the highland pastures and lakes by car/tour. On mountain roads, fog, rain and roadworks change journey times.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
Meydan has cafés and family restaurants, and the university area is younger; the city follows a tea-and-conversation rhythm rather than intense clubbing. For Trabzon hasırı (woven silver), telkâri filigree and butter/cheese, check purity, the producer and the cold chain.
Day trips from Trabzon
Sumela–Maçka one day, Uzungöl in the east another, and Akçaabat–Çal in the west another. It's smarter to make Rize and Ayder a separate stay continuing east than a day trip from Trabzon.
Best time to visit Trabzon
May–June is green but rainy; September balanced. July–August is busy with the highland and Arab tourist season; winter may bring snow and road closures.
How to budget for your trip
A car/tour and highland accommodation raise costs; city meals are balanced. On a package tour, ask whether Sumela entry/shuttle and lunch are included, and which pasture is really included.
Safety and common mistakes
Don't speed inexperienced on foggy mountain roads. Don't take your expectation of a view at Uzungöl as a weather guarantee. Don't make a long journey to Sumela without checking the official notice.

Vegan and halal restaurants in Trabzon
For Trabzon we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.
