How to plan a trip to Eskişehir

Eskişehir's ease lies in its compactness: the Porsuk area is the contemporary city, the Odunpazarı slopes history and museums, and Sazova a family/park day. Set up two areas so you don't spend a weekend constantly on the tram.

The colourful houses are a living neighbourhood; don't turn doorsteps into a photo studio. Check the closing days of OMM and the municipal museums.

Things to do in Eskişehir

Odunpazarı and OMM

Choose between the Kurşunlu Külliyesi, the meerschaum/wood museums and OMM according to your interests. Rather than collecting every small museum, one traditional and one contemporary institution are enough.

The Porsuk and the centre

Walk the Adalar area in the morning; the gondola isn't the only way to explore. Add the Yılmaz Büyükerşen Wax Museum and the Haller according to your interests.

Sazova and Kentpark

Sazova is a half day especially for families with children; check separate tickets/hours for institutions within the park. The Kentpark beach is seasonal and for show.

Area by area: where to go

Adalar/the Porsuk suits the centre and nightlife; Odunpazarı atmosphere but a hill/quiet nights; Bağlar students and budgets; and Tepebaşı transport.

Where to stay in Eskişehir

For a short weekend, the station–Porsuk line is the most practical. At an Odunpazarı boutique hotel, read about vehicle access and the hill; in Bağlar, about night-time noise.

What to eat in Eskişehir

Çibörek, balaban kebab, met halva and poppy-seed products stand out. Çibörek is deep-fried; its name doesn't mean 'raw börek', and the filling cooks through.

For Crimean Tatar cuisine, choose a single-product business; for balaban, ask about portion/sauce; and for met halva, choose a fresh pack.

Getting to and around Eskişehir

The YHT from Istanbul, Ankara and Konya is the main access; Eskişehir station is close to the centre. The bus station is connected by tram; flights at Hasan Polatkan Airport are limited.

The Eskart is used on trams/buses. The centre–Porsuk is walkable; Odunpazarı requires a tram/bus + a climb, and Sazova a tram/bus.

Cafés, nightlife and shopping

Adalar and Barlar Sokağı are lively, Bağlar student-focused, and Odunpazarı quiet in the evening. For meerschaum, ask for documentation of genuine stone/craftsmanship; for glass and met halva, the local producer label.

Day trips from Eskişehir

The Phrygian Valley and Yazılıkaya are a full day by car/tour; Kütahya, for tiles and museums, is a separate route by train/bus. Ankara is easy by YHT, but stay the night rather than squeezing in day trips back and forth.

Best time to visit Eskişehir

Spring/autumn is ideal; winter is frosty and sometimes snowy, summer dry/hot. University and weekend events can fill central hotels.

How to budget for your trip

Early YHT tickets, walking and municipal museums make it budget-friendly. The gondola, many small museums and theme-park tickets add up; choose according to your interests.

Safety and common mistakes

Don't reduce the Porsuk experience to a Venice comparison. Don't approach Odunpazarı house doors without permission. Leave a buffer for tram breakdowns/crowds before your return YHT.

These aren't places to tick off one by one — they're the stops that best capture how the city eats. Opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.

Dietary preferences

Vegan and halal restaurants in Eskişehir

For Eskişehir we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.

Vegan Pick

Fully vegan

OMM INN

Odunpazarı · Vegan Mediterranean and fusion

A restaurant next to a museum serving a fully vegan menu that runs from breakfast to pizza and desserts.

Why we picked it: It brings design, art and comprehensive vegan cooking together on the Odunpazarı walking route.

Verification note

The venue's plant-based coverage was checked in the directory; reconfirm the menu and opening days before booking.

Halal Pick

Re-check recommended

Abdüsselam Balaban Kebap

Merkez · Eskişehir balaban kebab

A long-established eatery keeping the city's balaban kebab tradition.

Why we picked it: For trying the local signature dish; ask for a current halal document on meat sourcing and butter.

Verification note

As no current independent certificate record was found, reconfirm meat sourcing, the shared kitchen and alcohol policy with the business.

Menus, suppliers and certifications change. If you keep strict halal, confirm the current certificate, alcohol, sauce ingredients and shared-kitchen risk directly with the restaurant.
