How to plan a trip to Cappadocia
Cappadocia isn't a city but a wide region. Göreme suits walking and transport, Uçhisar views/calm, Ürgüp restaurants–hotels, and Avanos pottery and the Kızılırmak river — each a different base.
Balloon flights depend on the aviation authority's decision and can be cancelled. Book your flight for the first morning and keep the following days as backups; even just watching the view isn't guaranteed to coincide with flights.
Things to do in Cappadocia
Göreme Open-Air Museum
Go at opening time; check the separate ticket/museum pass conditions for special sections such as the Dark Church. Follow the ban on flash and touching the frescoes.
The valleys and Uçhisar
Pigeon Valley, Love Valley, Red Valley (Kızılçukur) and Ihlara differ in difficulty/location. Rather than seeing all the valleys in a day by tour bus, choose one for hiking.
The underground cities and Avanos
Derinkuyu/Kaymaklı are narrow, enclosed and full of stairs; those with claustrophobia should think it over. In Avanos, choose a workshop without sales pressure at the pottery demonstration.
Area by area: where to go
Göreme is car-free and lively; Uçhisar scenic and quiet; Ürgüp has a wider range of restaurants/hotels; Avanos the river and workshops; and Mustafapaşa stone architecture and slowness.
Where to stay in Cappadocia
A cave room looks romantic, but humidity, windows, ventilation and stairs matter. Don't take a 'balloon view' listing as a guarantee of the flight direction. On a first car-free visit, Göreme is easy.
What to eat in Cappadocia
Testi kebab is more than a serving show; it requires pre-ordering and cooking time. Try wedding soup, Nevşehir tava, mantı, dried kaymak and local wines.
Instead of a tour menu, choose a village restaurant or a produce-focused evening in Ürgüp/Göreme. Know the safety arrangements for breaking the pot and the portion/price from the start.
Getting to and around Cappadocia
From NAV Nevşehir and ASR Kayseri airports, a hotel transfer is the most practical option; flight-linked shuttles require a reservation. Overnight buses provide connections to Nevşehir/Göreme.
There are dolmuşes between villages, but you need a car/tour to combine the valleys and underground cities flexibly. Hiking trails depend on the weather, mud and signage.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
Nightlife is less about bars than terraces, wine houses and an early-to-bed rhythm for sunrise. Ask about the master's signature on Avanos pottery, knots/origin for carpets, and transport conditions for wine.
Day trips from Cappadocia
Ihlara–Selime is a full day to the south-west; Hacıbektaş a separate line to the north; and the Salt Lake is far, with a seasonal look. Continuing to Ankara or Konya can form a route via road/rail connections.
Best time to visit Cappadocia
Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking, but wind may cancel balloons. Summer days are hot; winter is enchanting with snow but carries the risk of icy trails and transport disruption.
How to budget for your trip
The balloon is the biggest expense; the price varies with season and demand. Compare registered operators, insurance, flight duration and cancellation/refund conditions. The Museum Pass/MüzeKart covers many sites, but special sections may be separate.
Safety and common mistakes
Don't send a deposit for a price seen on social media and choose an unauthorised company. Don't step beyond barriers at valley edges. On an ATV tour, take helmets, dust and group speed seriously.
Where to eat: selected places
These aren't places to tick off one by one — they're the stops that best capture how the city eats. Opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.

Vegan and halal restaurants in Cappadocia
For Cappadocia we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.

Göreme · Anatolian cuisine
A small restaurant, by reservation, serving daily set menus and pottery-kebab dishes.
Why we picked it: Its small-scale service makes it easy to discuss the menu in advance; its halal status is unconfirmed.
Verification note
As no current independent certificate record was found, reconfirm meat sourcing, the shared kitchen and alcohol policy with the business.
