How to plan a trip to Şanlıurfa
Urfa's story stretches from Neolithic archaeology to the stories of the prophets, from bazaar crafts to a table tradition with music. Seeing the Archaeology Museum before Göbeklitepe gives context; the site itself then gives scale.
A sıra gecesi isn't just a touristy music show; it's a tradition of conversation, poetry, music and food. Ask about the programme's performers, duration, food and seating; don't assume the loudest package is 'the most authentic'.
Things to do in Şanlıurfa
Archaeology and Haleplibahçe
The Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum and the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum are extensive; set aside at least a few hours before/after your Göbeklitepe morning.
Göbeklitepe and the Taş Tepeler
The site's shuttle walk, protective roof and exhibition layout may change. Don't assume sites such as Karahantepe are open to visitors without an official source.
Balıklıgöl and the bazaar
Visit the pool with respect for worship and the local visiting rhythm. Link the Gümrük Hanı, Bakırcılar, the Sipahi Pazarı and access to Urfa Castle on your walk.
Area by area: where to go
Balıklıgöl/Haşimiye suits history and the bazaar; the city centre modern hotels/transport; the airport road only for transfers.
Where to stay in Şanlıurfa
On a first visit, a guesthouse/hotel within walking distance of Balıklıgöl is atmospheric; in a stone courtyard, ask about air conditioning/heating, noise and vehicle access. For a new hotel, check the taxi distance to the centre.
What to eat in Şanlıurfa
Urfa kebab, liver, lebeni, borani, open/closed pide, şıllık and isot stand out. You can adjust the heat of a kebab with the isot on the table; the generalisation that 'Urfa food isn't spicy' isn't true at every restaurant.
Liver can be eaten in the morning/evening; although çiğ köfte was traditionally made with meat, commercial servings are meat-free by regulation. Mention allergies and your spice level.
Getting to and around Şanlıurfa
GNY GAP Airport is far from the city centre; Havaş/taxis/transfers are used. The Gaziantep–Urfa road is frequent, while the Mardin direction is a longer regional route.
Balıklıgöl–the bazaar–the museums are walkable; Göbeklitepe is visited by shuttle/tour/taxi/car, and Halfeti on a separate road day. Cut down on midday walking in the heat.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
Evenings revolve around sıra gecesi, Gümrük Hanı coffee and bazaar walks. For isot, clarified butter and pistachios, ask about new produce, hygiene and packaging; for copper, handcraftsmanship.
Day trips from Şanlıurfa
Halfeti is a full day; Harran a half to full day for its beehive houses and archaeological context; Karahantepe is planned separately depending on access. Combine with Gaziantep for 2 nights.
Best time to visit Şanlıurfa
Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is extremely hot and winter can be cold. Ramadan and the religious holidays change bazaar/meal times.
How to budget for your trip
Museums and bazaar walks are balanced; private tours, a Halfeti boat and a sıra gecesi raise costs. Break package contents down into per person/food/transport.
Safety and common mistakes
Don't step beyond barriers at archaeological sites. Don't reduce a sıra gecesi to filming people without permission and loud consumption. Don't go to Göbeklitepe at summer midday without water.
Where to eat: selected places
These aren't places to tick off one by one — they're the stops that best capture how the city eats. Opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.

Vegan and halal restaurants in Şanlıurfa
For Şanlıurfa we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.

A large restaurant serving kebabs, aubergine kebab and regional desserts.
Why we picked it: For an Urfa selection suited to family and group tables; the meat's halal source must be confirmed with documents.
