How to plan a trip to Çanakkale
Çanakkale is three different stories: a lively university town, the multi-layered archaeology of Troy and the war memory of Gallipoli. Don't turn them into quick photo stops on the same day.
Bozcaada is crowded on summer weekends and may be subject to vehicle quotas/reservations. The island isn't a 'lunch stop right next to Troy' but at least a full day.
Things to do in Çanakkale
Central Çanakkale
Before the Troy Museum, see the Naval Museum/the view of Kilitbahir and the seafront promenade in the centre. Don't confuse the film's horse with the archaeological representation of the Trojan Horse.
Troy and the Troy Museum
Seeing the museum before the archaeological site makes the layers easier to understand. Allow for transport and closing times between the two; there's little shade and plenty of wind on the open site.
The Gallipoli Historical Site
The cemeteries are living memorial sites; silence and respectful dress are required. The peninsula is large; a selected route and a guide who gives context are worth more than many stops.
Bozcaada
A full day/1 night for the castle, the Greek Quarter, vineyards and coves. Check the return ferry, wind and vehicle reservations with GESTAŞ.
Area by area: where to go
The seafront/bazaar suits a first visit and nightlife; Kepez is quieter, towards the bus station/hospital; and central Bozcaada offers island night-time atmosphere.
Where to stay in Çanakkale
In central Çanakkale, the back streets behind the seafront are practical. A night in Eceabat if Gallipoli is your focus, or in Bozcaada if the island is, reduces transfers.
What to eat in Çanakkale
Sardines, cheese halva, Ezine cheese, island herbs and Bozcaada wines stand out. Sardines depend on the season and catch; frozen fish in every season isn't the same experience.
At central fish restaurants and Bozcaada meyhanes, ask the day's prices; carry cheese/charcuterie chilled.
Getting to and around Çanakkale
CKZ flights are limited; buses from Istanbul/İzmir are common. The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge changes road traffic; the Eceabat/Kilitbahir ferries continue to carry foot passengers and vehicles.
The centre is walkable; Troy by minibus/tour/car, the Gallipoli peninsula by guided tour or car, and Bozcaada via the Geyikli ferry each take a separate day.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
The bazaar's student bars are lively; Bozcaada evenings follow a wine and quiet-street rhythm. For ceramics, Ezine cheese and island wine, look at the producer label and consider liquids/the cold chain for flights.
Day trips from Çanakkale
Assos–Behramkale lies to the south, the Kazdağları further east/south, and Bozcaada on the Geyikli line. Troy + Bozcaada on the same day is risky given ferry queues.
Best time to visit Çanakkale
April–June and September are ideal; wind is a deciding factor all year. Around 18 March and 25 April the historical site is very busy; summer Bozcaada reservations fill up early.
How to budget for your trip
The centre is affordable; island accommodation/ferries and private tours raise costs. At Gallipoli, a small-group tour with context can be worth more than a cheap transfer with many stops.
Safety and common mistakes
Don't be loud, take inappropriate photos or picnic in the cemeteries. Don't risk missing the last Bozcaada ferry. At Troy, don't climb onto the layers or touch the stones.
Where to eat: selected places
These aren't places to tick off one by one — they're the stops that best capture how the city eats. Opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.
