How to plan a trip to Bursa
Doing Bursa as a day trip for just kebabs and the cable car misses the early Ottoman capital. Plan the Ulu Cami–Koza Han–Yeşil lines on one day, and Muradiye–Çekirge or Cumalıkızık on the second.
Uludağ isn't an in-city viewpoint; the cable car queue, weather, snow and the transfer to the upper area take half to a full day.
Things to do in Bursa
The Ulu Cami and the hans
Visit the Ulu Cami with respect for prayer times, and the Koza Han and hans district when the shops are open. Don't reduce the UNESCO site to bazaar shopping.
Yeşil, Emir Sultan and Muradiye
The külliyes show different periods of early Ottoman architecture. Rather than walking from one end to the other, build two clusters using public transport.
Cumalıkızık and Uludağ
Cumalıkızık is calmer early in the morning; in the living village, don't step into doorways. Check Uludağ weather/cable car status on the same day.
Area by area: where to go
Heykel/Tophane suits history and transport; Çekirge thermal hotels; Nilüfer contemporary cafés/nightlife; and Mudanya the sea and the Istanbul ferry.
Where to stay in Bursa
The Heykel area for a first history trip, Çekirge for thermal baths, Nilüfer for newer hotels/evenings. Don't book Uludağ ski accommodation assuming the same access as a city hotel.
What to eat in Bursa
İskender kebab, pideli köfte, cantık, tahini pide, candied chestnuts and milk halva stand out. 'İskender' is used by many businesses through a brand/surname story; ask about the portion and butter service.
Koza Han coffee is for atmosphere, Kayhan for pide/bakeries, and the bazaar for kebabs — different stops.
Getting to and around Bursa
From Istanbul, by sea bus to Mudanya/Güzelyalı + Bursaray/bus, or by road; the YHT connection isn't directly in the centre. Yenişehir Airport has limited flights.
The BursaKart is used on the metro, trams, buses and some connections. The historic centre is walkable; Cumalıkızık by bus/minibus and Uludağ by cable car/road are planned separately.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
Nilüfer is livelier, the centre quiet in the evening; a thermal hamam is a separate cultural experience. Ask about the real silk content/label on silk products, the production date on candied chestnuts, and weaving quality on towels.
Day trips from Bursa
İznik for its lake and early Christian/Ottoman heritage, Mudanya–Trilye for the coast and Greek architecture, and Uludağ for nature/skiing are separate days.
Best time to visit Bursa
Spring and autumn are good for the centre. In winter Uludağ is busy; the cable car may close in the wind. In summer the centre is hot/humid and the mountain cool.
How to budget for your trip
Walking the centre is economical; Uludağ transport, equipment and facility prices raise costs. Distinguish Museum Pass/MüzeKart coverage from municipal/national palace sites.
Safety and common mistakes
Don't enter house courtyards in Cumalıkızık without permission. Don't underestimate the cable car's last return and closures. Don't rely on shine alone to spot fake silk.
Where to eat: selected places
These aren't places to tick off one by one — they're the stops that best capture how the city eats. Opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.

Vegan and halal restaurants in Bursa
For Bursa we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.
