How to plan a trip to Fethiye
Fethiye is not a single centre but an activity region. The bazaar–Paspatur and the rock tombs make a city day; Ölüdeniz–Babadağ an adventure day; and Kayaköy–Gemiler a history/nature day.
For paragliding and boat trips, rather than the cheapest offer, ask about licences, insurance, weather cancellations and boat capacity. The weather decision comes from the pilot/authority; no risks are taken for the sake of a schedule.
Things to do in Fethiye
Central Fethiye and the tombs
Walk Paspatur, the fish market and the museum; climb to the Amyntas rock tomb when it's not hot. For sunset, head towards Şövalye Island/Çalış.
Ölüdeniz and Babadağ
Check the lagoon's conservation/entry and sunbed conditions. The cable car can be used independently for the view; ask the flight company for its authorisation and insurance documents.
Kayaköy and the Lycian Way
Kayaköy is an open site with little shade. The trail stretching to Ölüdeniz requires physical preparation and navigation; don't mistake it for a short outing in sandals.
Area by area: where to go
Central Fethiye/Paspatur suits transport and evenings; Çalış sunsets and a flat seafront; Ölüdeniz/Ovacık beaches and activities; and Kayaköy rural calm.
Where to stay in Fethiye
For a first car-free trip, the centre or Ovacık on the dolmuş line. Check that the sea at Çalış is not like the lagoon, summer night-time noise in Ölüdeniz, and transport for rural accommodation.
What to eat in Fethiye
Aegean–Mediterranean wild greens, fish, goat products, gözleme and citrus stand out. In the fish market model, you may pay separately for the fish and for cooking and table service; ask the total from the start.
For village breakfasts and gözleme, think about portions/waste; for boat meals, find out what's included and whether drinks are covered.
Getting to and around Fethiye
DLM Dalaman is the nearest airport; Havaş/MUTTAŞ and transfers go to Fethiye. The otogar is separate from the centre, and Ölüdeniz and Çalış are on different dolmuş lines.
Centre–Çalış by bike/dolmuş, Ölüdeniz–Kayaköy by dolmuş/taxi; the coves are explored by boat or car. The Babadağ cable car and paragliding depend on the weather.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
Paspatur bars, Çalış seafront evenings and the more intense foreign-holiday nightlife of Hisarönü. Rather than Lycian-themed souvenirs, look for producer labels on local honey, olive oil and weaving.
Day trips from Fethiye
Saklıkent–Tlos is a full day in the same direction; Dalyan–Kaunos lies towards Dalaman; the 12 Islands and Göcek boat route is a separate day at sea. Kaş, a long drive away, needs its own accommodation.
Best time to visit Fethiye
May–June and September are ideal for the sea/trails. Summer is very hot; do Lycian hikes in the morning. Winter is rainy but the centre is calm; boat and flight services may be limited.
How to budget for your trip
Paragliding, boats, the lagoon and transfers inflate the budget. Public beaches, walking and dolmuşes balance it. In activity packages, add photos/video, transfers and cancellation conditions to the total price.
Safety and common mistakes
Don't choose unlicensed/suspiciously cheap activities. Don't underestimate water/shade at Kayaköy and on the trail. Don't descend the steep path into Butterfly Valley without experience; boat access may be safer.
Where to eat: selected places
These aren't places to tick off one by one — they're the stops that best capture how the city eats. Opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.
