How to plan a trip to Alanya
With its peninsula castle, Alanya is a historic city in its own right, not just Antalya's distant beach. Plan the castle, shipyard and cave on one day, and the beach and Dim/Sapadere nature on another.
The transfer from AYT isn't short just because the map says 'Antalya'. On a night landing, shared-transfer stops can lengthen the journey.
Things to do in Alanya
Alanya Castle and the cable car
Take the cable car up towards Ehmedek and walk the signposted castle route; the Kızılkule/Shipyard are at a different, lower level. The museum pass and the cable car may be run separately.
Cleopatra, Damlataş and the harbour
Damlataş Cave is small and humid; don't treat health claims as a medical guarantee. At Cleopatra, follow warnings about waves/the shelving seabed.
The Dim River and Sapadere
The Dim tables offer coolness above the water; ask about the menu/seating charge. Sapadere Canyon involves a slippery walk and requires a separate transfer.
Area by area: where to go
Cleopatra/Saray suits the beach and centre; the harbour/Tophane nightlife and history; Oba quieter long stays; and Mahmutlar apartments/resorts but requires transfers to the centre.
Where to stay in Alanya
For a first visit, the Cleopatra–Saray line; for families/long stays, Oba. In Mahmutlar, check a cheap hotel's real dolmuş time to the centre.
What to eat in Alanya
Antalya piyaz, courgette flowers, fish, bitter-orange products and Yörük cuisine can be found locally. Treat a resort buffet and local city cuisine as separate experiences.
At Dim River restaurants, ask whether the use of seating/platforms is included with the order, and about fish/meat portions.
Getting to and around Alanya
GZP Gazipaşa-Alanya is closer; AYT Antalya Airport has more flight options but the road transfer is long. Add transfer time and late-night arrival to the ticket price.
The centre, the harbour and Cleopatra are walkable; the cable car shortens the climb to the castle. The Dim River, Sapadere and the Side direction require a bus/tour/car.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
The harbour/bar area is busy, Cleopatra more café-focused, and Oba offers family evenings. For bananas, avocados and citrus, look for the local season; for textiles, origin/quality labels.
Day trips from Alanya
Sapadere and Dim lie east/north; Side–Aspendos west; and Gazipaşa's ancient site/coves on an eastern route. Central Antalya can be a day trip, but the total transfer is tiring.
Best time to visit Alanya
April–June and October are ideal; summer is very hot/humid. In September the sea is warm but it can be busy. Winter is calm for long stays, though some tour services are reduced.
How to budget for your trip
Balanced with an apart-hotel and public beaches; beach clubs, the cable car, transfers and tour packages add up. Even if an AYT flight is cheap, add a private transfer to the total cost.
Safety and common mistakes
Don't step beyond barriers on the castle rocks. Don't trust misleading tours selling health promises for Damlataş. Don't sit down/order at the Dim River without a menu.
Where to eat: selected places
These aren't places to tick off one by one — they're the stops that best capture how the city eats. Opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.

Vegan and halal restaurants in Alanya
For Alanya we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.
