Okinawa Travel Guide

Okinawa isn't a tropical add-on to Japan; it's a distinct cultural geography where the history of the independent Ryukyu kingdom, the memory of war, coral seas and a distinctive table are layered along the main island.

How to plan an Okinawa trip? Separate the main island from the archipelago

This guide covers Okinawa Main Island, where Naha is. Miyako, Ishigaki, Iriomote, Kume and Daito aren't day-trip stops around the same city; most need separate flights/ferries and their own travel plan. When searching for flights, don't confuse Okinawa Prefecture with Okinawa-hontō.

Divide the main island into Naha–Shuri; the south for war/history; Chatan–Onna in the centre; Motobu–Nakijin in the north-west; and Yanbaru in the north. Two days for Naha, three for the centre/north and one for Kerama or a beach backup balances a first trip.

Typhoons and strong winds can shut down not just sea tours but flights, the Yui Rail, buses and facilities. Don't tie a ferry/diving day to the same day as an international flight; spend your last night on the main island, preferably somewhere with access to Naha.

Naha Airport, the Yui Rail and getting around the main island

The Yui Rail (monorail) links Naha Airport with the Kokusai-dori area and Shuri via 19 stations; it doesn't cover the whole main island. From Shuri Station you need a walk/bus to reach the castle area. Check IC card compatibility and day-ticket calculations with current official information.

The Churaumi Aquarium is roughly two hours north of Naha Airport by car, or about three hours by express bus; it's not an in-town attraction. A hire car gives great flexibility for Onna, Motobu and Yanbaru. If you're travelling by bus, plan single-area days with a backup for infrequent returns.

Ferries leave from Tomari Wharf for Kerama, Kume and other islands; port/terminal, fast ferry and car ferry may not be at the same place or time. Confirm tickets, ID, luggage and weather cancellation policy with the operator. Leave transfer time between Naha Airport and Tomari.

Hiring a car in Okinawa: documents, driving on the left and parking

To drive in Japan you need your valid original licence plus an international driving permit in the 1949 Geneva Convention format (licences from a few countries need an official Japanese translation instead), and your passport; confirm the documents with the company before collecting the car. A translation alone, or the wrong convention format, may not be accepted.

Traffic drives on the left. In Naha, bus lanes are restricted at certain times; on the Okinawa Expressway the general speed limit may be lower than on the mainland. Road surfaces containing limestone get slippery in the rain; avoid sudden braking and fast cornering.

Even in a minor single-vehicle accident, move to a safe place and call the police and the hire company; without a report, the insurance process can fall apart. Apply a zero-driving rule after alcohol. In Naha a car is a parking burden; collecting it after your city days reduces both cost and stress.

Reading Shuri Castle and Ryukyu history correctly

Shurijo was the political and ceremonial centre of the Ryukyu Kingdom. After the 2019 fire, the Seiden main hall is being rebuilt; although the exterior is visible in August 2026, don't expect the whole interior to be a finished palace. Public opening is targeted for autumn 2026; check the current stage on the official park site.

Visit Shuri not as a quick photo route from the gates to the main area but as a cultural day connected with Sonohyan-utaki, the stone walls, the Enkakuji area and Tamaudun. Through its language, religion and diplomacy, Okinawa carries a kingdom history distinct from mainland Japan.

In the south, the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, Himeyuri and the cave sites tell of the civilian losses of the Battle of Okinawa. Don't visit them in the same tone as an entertainment spot; be quiet at mass graves/memorials and consider children's ages for the traumatic exhibits.

Churaumi, Motobu, Nakijin and Yanbaru

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is inside Ocean Expo Park; rather than seeing the big tank and leaving straight away, make time for the sea turtle area, the native Okinawan village, the botanical area and the shore. Hours and some shows change seasonally; go near opening to avoid the busiest times around the big tank.

Nakijin Castle opens up Ryukyu's Hokuzan history and sea views; the stone path is slippery when wet. On the Bise Fukugi tree lanes, mind the houses, fields and cycling speed. Kouri Bridge is a photo stop, but don't let parking and beach access spill over into private areas.

The Yanbaru north is a UNESCO natural site with sensitive wildlife. Do night animal tours with a licensed/local guide, don't play birdsong recordings loudly, and drive slowly on the roads. Don't go to the far north on a day trip from Naha and try to make a flight the same night.

Okinawa's beaches, Kerama and sea safety

Use only designated swimming areas with lifeguards. The risk of box jellyfish rises especially from May to October; if there are protective nets, flags or staff warnings, don't argue. Wear sea shoes, sun/heat protection and a long-sleeved rash guard; don't step on coral or take pieces.

When snorkelling, don't drift off alone; an inflatable ring is not a safety device against currents. If you're caught in a rip current, the basic approach is to swim out parallel to the shore and signal for help rather than fighting straight towards it. For sea emergencies the Japan Coast Guard is 118; for general emergencies, 119.

A Kerama day tour isn't "guaranteed turtles". Check the operator's licence, life jackets, guide ratio, cancellation and port. After diving, leave the surface interval your training organisation recommends before flying; don't fly the same day.

Where to stay in Okinawa?

Naha is the best start for car-free transport, markets, evenings and flights; don't expect a resort beach. Chatan is lively, with a central-island location, sunsets and American-influenced restaurants; car traffic is heavy. Onna is strong for resorts/beaches/diving, but local buses and evening options may be limited.

Motobu suits seeing Churaumi, Bise and Nakijin early; Nago offers a balance of shops and transport in the north. Rather than driving from Naha to Churaumi and back every day, moving north for two or three nights saves fuel and time.

At a beachfront property, don't ask whether the beach you see is private; ask about the swimming area, tides, lifeguard season and sunbed charges. For typhoons, flexible cancellation, a generator and access to indoor dining matter more than a luxury view.

What to eat in Okinawa? The Ryukyu table and island drinks

Goya champuru is made with bitter melon, tofu, egg and pork; rafute with long-cooked pork belly; and Okinawa soba with wheat noodles and pork broth. Despite the name, it isn't buckwheat soba. Soki is bone-in rib, tebichi pig's trotter.

Taco rice is Okinawa's adaptation of post-war American influence; at places like King Tacos the portions can be large. Umibudo (sea grapes) stand out for their fresh texture and jimami tofu for its peanut content; anyone with a peanut allergy should take particular care.

Awamori is a rice distillate and may also be seen as shima-zake; don't underestimate its high alcohol content. Don't drive. Blue Seal ice cream is the popular face of American–Okinawan history; Makishi Market is good for learning about produce, but ask about the upstairs cooking charge up front.

Where to eat: selected places

Vegan and halal restaurants in Okinawa

For Okinawa we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.

Vegan Pick

Fully vegan

Gajimaru

Chatan · Okinawan and fusion

A fully vegan restaurant making colourful bowls, sandwiches and desserts with island vegetables.

Why we picked it: You can try Okinawan produce in light but filling dishes that suit a beach day.

Verification note

The venue's plant-based coverage was checked in the directory; reconfirm the menu and opening days before booking.

Halal Pick

Restaurant-declared

Okinawa Halal Kitchen

Nakagusuku · Fast food and biryani

A mostly takeaway kitchen near Okinawa Mosque, opened in 2026, that describes itself as 100 per cent halal.

Why we picked it: A straightforward option on the island for anyone looking for a clear halal declaration and an alcohol-free everyday menu.

Verification note

The business declares that it is 100 per cent halal; as no third-party certificate is visible, ask about current documents and kitchen practice.

Before you go

Information to stay safe and respect the culture in Okinawa

Separate the main island from Miyako/Ishigaki

These aren't neighbouring coasts reached by road but island routes requiring separate flights/ferries.

Verify your international driving permit

You need the 1949 Geneva format, your original licence and your passport; get confirmation from the company before booking.

Take box jellyfish nets seriously

Especially from May to October, swim only in protected/lifeguarded areas; don't enter the sea when there's a warning.

Don't assume Shurijo is finished

Reconstruction of the main hall continues in 2026; check the public opening and visible sections on the official site.

Don't rush from a ferry to a flight

Typhoons and wind can cancel the return. Keep your last night on the main island.

Be quiet at battle sites

Memorials and caves are places of memory for civilian losses; don't use the language of fun photos.

Continue your Japan route

This city works well on its own; if you have time, the stops below add a different region and city to the same trip.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for Okinawa?+

5 days is a good start for the main island; 6 days is ideal with Kerama or a weather backup. Miyako/Ishigaki is a separate leg of travel.

Do you need a car in Okinawa?+

Not for Naha; very useful for Onna, Churaumi, Nakijin and Yanbaru. On a car-free route, plan single-area days by express/local bus.

Where to stay in Okinawa?+

Naha suits transport and evenings, Onna resorts/beaches, Chatan the central island, Motobu Churaumi and Nakijin, and Nago access to the north. Two bases work well.

Is Shuri Castle open?+

Large parts of the park are open; reconstruction of the Seiden main hall continues in 2026, with public opening targeted for the autumn. Check the current area on the official site.

Can you visit the Churaumi Aquarium as a day trip from Naha?+

You can, but it can take about two hours each way by car and about three by express bus. Staying overnight in Motobu makes the northern route noticeably easier.

Is it safe to swim in the sea in Okinawa?+

In designated lifeguarded areas and by following that day's flags. Because of currents, typhoons and the May–October box jellyfish risk, don't swim alone in a deserted cove.

Note: Typhoons can shut flights/ferries/facilities; Shurijo's reopening stage, Churaumi's hours, beach nets and Yui Rail products can change. Check official sources on the day. Last updated: .
