Planning a city, coast and mountain trip
A Georgia trip changes mood as you move from Tbilisi’s balcony-lined streets to the mountains or Black Sea. Think of a long city dinner, clouds lifting over Kazbegi and a Batumi boulevard walk as distinct experiences. Combine them around the season and the pace you enjoy.
On a short holiday, choose Tbilisi and one other region instead of forcing in all three. Mountain travel needs weather flexibility; the coast needs time for the journey. Changing cities every night cuts into good dinners and quiet mornings. A few well-chosen bases can be more rewarding than more destination names.
Georgia travel essentials
Tourist insurance in 2026
Tourists face a health and accident insurance requirement from 2026. The official notice specifies at least GEL 30,000 cover and a Georgian or English policy covering the full stay; check current conditions with the embassy.
Entry documents depend on the traveller
Confirm passport, identity-document and visa eligibility for your nationality through official channels. Rules for one traveller do not establish another traveller’s entry rights or permitted stay.
GEL and transport costs
The currency is the Georgian lari. Keep cash for small businesses and mountain transfers; agree the route, waiting time and return arrangements when pricing a private car.
Mountain roads and weather
Weather, snow and traffic can disrupt the Kazbegi road. Check Georgia Roads Department notices and avoid a tight connection between returning from the mountains and an international flight.
6–7 days
Tbilisi and Kazbegi
Four nights in Tbilisi and two in Stepantsminda. Spend your final night back in Tbilisi after the mountain leg.
Cities and mountain bases in Georgia
Tbilisi is the cultural and transport hub, Batumi a coastal city, and Kazbegi a mountain stay based in Stepantsminda. Batumi and Kazbegi are not neighbouring stops.
