How to plan a trip to Shenzhen
In a few decades, Shenzhen has transformed from fishing settlements into a global technology and design hub; the scarcity of historic landmarks makes reading its urbanism, parks and creative transformation more important.
Futian's civic axis, Nanshan's design–technology areas and the eastern coast are three different Shenzhens.
Things to do in Shenzhen
The Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition
The museum and urban planning exhibitions in Futian are a good start for understanding the city's growth; check passport-based reservations and exhibition days.
OCT-LOFT and Nanshan
Combine the galleries and cafés in the former industrial area with Design Society/Sea World or Shenzhen Bay park; choose the institutions' programmes in advance.
Dapeng and the eastern coast
Dapeng Fortress, Jiaochangwei or coastal trails require a long transfer from the centre. On holidays, check vehicle quotas/reservations and return traffic.
Area by area: where to go
Futian is the most practical base for high-speed trains, the civic centre and the metro in all directions.
Nanshan suits design, technology and the coastal park; Luohu old commerce, markets and the border connection.
Where to stay in Shenzhen
Futian is balanced for the metro and high-speed trains; Nanshan offers more creative, modern evenings. If you're choosing a hotel by the Hong Kong border, know the opening hours of the crossing you'll use.
What to eat in Shenzhen
As a city of migrants, Shenzhen offers Cantonese, Hunan, Chaoshan and northern cuisines side by side. Do a regional restaurant tour rather than looking for a single 'Shenzhen dish'.
Chaoshan beef hotpot, dim sum and seafood stand out. Ask about fish/meat prices by weight and tea/service charges.
Getting to and around Shenzhen
Bao'an SZX airport is connected to the metro. Shenzhen North, Futian and Luohu have different train/border functions; for the Hong Kong crossing, confirm the entry rules of both regions separately.
The metro is modern and extensive; the city is very long east–west. Don't plan Futian–Nanshan and the Dapeng coast on the same day.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
The Coco Park area offers social nightlife, OCT-LOFT culture and Shenzhen Bay walks. Visit the electronics markets before closing; don't count on late-night shopping.
Day trips from Shenzhen
Hong Kong has separate entry, internet and payment arrangements; check passport/visa conditions separately from mainland China.
For distant routes such as the Huizhou beaches or Kaiping, calculate the real driving time from the centre.
Best time to visit Shenzhen
Autumn to early winter is dry and comfortable; summer is hot, humid and carries typhoon risk. Change coastal/rooftop plans according to official warnings.
How to budget for your trip
The metro and local food are affordable; design shopping, premium hotels and border connections push up costs. For electronics, check warranty and tax/refund conditions.
Safety and common mistakes
In Huaqiangbei, watch out for fake brands, locked devices and international warranty issues; don't pay without testing the product.
Remember that leaving for Hong Kong and coming back may count against your Chinese visa entries; confirm multiple-entry rights on your official document.

Dietary preferences
Vegan and halal restaurants in Shenzhen
For Shenzhen we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.
