How to plan a trip to Hangzhou
Hangzhou carries West Lake, the symbol of the classical Chinese landscape, and a digital-economy metropolis in the same city; its appeal lies in watching the scenery slowly.
A lake day, a Lingyin–tea village day and, if there's time, the Grand Canal neighbourhoods make a balanced plan.
Things to do in Hangzhou
West Lake
Walk the Su Causeway or the Bai Causeway in the morning; find out about the boat type and the pier it docks at. Choose just one of Leifeng Pagoda or the hilltop viewpoints.
Lingyin and Feilai Feng
The temple and the rock-carving area may have different ticket arrangements. Go early, stay quiet in the worship area and follow incense directions.
Longjing and Meijiawu
Walk the tea fields and, at a tasting, ask about the leaf grade, the price per gram and whether purchase is compulsory. Village traffic increases during the harvest.
Area by area: where to go
Hubin–the eastern side of the lake is practical for the metro, evening lights and a first visit.
The Beishan/Lingyin area is quiet and scenic; the Grand Canal offers a more local neighbourhood–culture experience.
Where to stay in Hangzhou
Accommodation near the metro on the east side of the lake gives morning-and-evening access to the shore. Check with photos and reviews whether a 'lake-view room' really has a clear view.
What to eat in Hangzhou
Dongpo pork, West Lake fish in vinegar gravy, Longjing shrimp and beggar's chicken are classics; some flavours can be sweet-and-sour.
Tasting Longjing in a teahouse is worthwhile, but watch out for touristy sales pressure. Ask about per-person tea service charges and water refills on the menu.
Getting to and around Hangzhou
Hangzhou Xiaoshan HGH airport is connected to the metro; high-speed trains may arrive at Hangzhou East or West. Although the train from Shanghai is short, calculate the door-to-door time including the station transfer.
The metro, buses, boats and bikes are used. The West Lake circuit is over 15 km; rather than walking all of it, choose a stretch of shore, a boat and a hill.
Cafés, nightlife and shopping
The Hubin shore lights, a night boat on the Grand Canal and small teahouses stand out. For lake shows, check the season, the stage, weather cancellations and seat location.
Day trips from Hangzhou
The water towns of Wuzhen or Nanxun are a full day; choose a weekday and plan the Shanghai connection with the right terminal.
Shaoxing offers a different day by high-speed train for its canals, yellow wine and literary history.
Best time to visit Hangzhou
Spring has blossoms but rain; autumn can be cool and clear. On national holidays the lake area gets extremely crowded.
How to budget for your trip
Walking the lake is free; boats, temples, shows and a well-located hotel push up costs. When buying tea, compare premium-grade claims with independent prices.
Safety and common mistakes
Don't get drawn into a high-pressure sale after a 'free tasting' in a tea village; see the product, the grams and the total before paying.
Don't stop on cycle paths as a pedestrian; carry your bag and phone carefully in the lakeside crowds.

Vegan and halal restaurants in Hangzhou
For Hangzhou we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.
