How to plan a trip to Lijiang

Lijiang carries both Naxi Dongba culture and the tourism economy of its canal-lined old town; a few streets away from the main square, quieter courtyards and waterways open up.

Set aside an old-town day, a Baisha–Shuhe day and, if the weather allows, a snow-mountain day; Shangri-La needs to be planned separately.

Things to do in Lijiang

Dayan Old Town and Black Dragon Pool

Walk the canals in the morning and climb to the Wangu Tower viewpoint; in the afternoon, see the mountain's reflection at Black Dragon Pool. Don't enter lived-in courtyards without permission.

Baisha and Shuhe

See the Baisha murals, Naxi village life and Shuhe's Tea Horse Road traces on the same northern route; distinguish touristy workshops from real production.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The cable car's altitude is very high; read about passport-based tickets, oxygen/health warnings and the park shuttle queue. If it closes because of the weather, don't pressure your driver over the ticket.

Area by area: where to go

Dayan's northern/eastern gates are practical for access to the old town and luggage; the centre is noisy at night.

Shuhe offers quieter stays and cafés; Baisha a rural rhythm but limited evening options.

Where to stay in Lijiang

Choose a courtyard hotel near a gate for old-town atmosphere, or Shuhe for quiet. As wheeled luggage is hard on cobbles, ask for the hotel's meeting point in advance.

What to eat in Lijiang

Naxi hotpot, chickpea jelly, yak meat and baba bread stand out. With yak products, ask about the real source, type of meat and cooking method.

Eat Yunnan mushrooms fully cooked, only at reliable restaurants. At a Pu'er tea tasting, see the price by gram and grade before paying.

Getting to and around Lijiang

From Sanyi LJG airport, bus/taxi; from Lijiang railway station, a city bus or car. As the old town is closed to traffic, confirm the final walk with luggage with your hotel.

Dayan Old Town is explored on foot, Shuhe/Baisha by car. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain tickets, park shuttles and cable car routes may be tied to a date and time.

Cafés, nightlife and shopping

The old town's bar street is loud; a small Naxi music performance or a Shuhe evening is a calmer alternative. Learn the cultural context of the performance.

Day trips from Lijiang

Tiger Leaping Gorge needs a separate 1–2 days physically and logistically; check the trail, luggage and the weather.

Shangri-La is the natural continuation by high-speed train, but ascend gradually above 3,000 m and set aside at least two nights.

Best time to visit Lijiang

Spring–autumn is good for clear views; summer is rainy and winter nights cold. Mountain weather can close in regardless of the town's.

How to budget for your trip

Old-town food and boutique hotels are mid-to-high priced; the mountain park, the cable car and a private car are the main costs. Assess your real health needs against 'oxygen pack' sales pressure.

Safety and common mistakes

Lijiang is at about 2,400 m and the mountain cable car much higher; avoid alcohol and overexertion on the first day, and descend if you have serious symptoms.

When buying tea, silver and medicinal products, don't pay large sums without seeing a certificate, the weight and the returns policy.

Dietary preferences

Vegan and halal restaurants in Lijiang

For Lijiang we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.

Vegan Pick

Vegan options

N's Kitchen

Dayan Old Town · Yunnan and world cuisine with vegan options

A café serving tofu, vegetable curry and mains that can be made vegan.

Why we picked it: For communicating about ingredients in English and several plant-based options in the old town.

Verification note

The venue's plant-based coverage was checked in the directory; reconfirm the menu and opening days before booking.

Halal Pick

Re-check recommended

Lijiang Muslim Restaurant

Outer gate of Dayan · Hui and Yunnan

A Muslim eatery serving beef noodles, lamb and pilaf.

Why we picked it: A community-focused dining candidate in a region where pork is common; confirm the current location and certificate.

Verification note

As no current independent certificate record was found, reconfirm meat sourcing, the shared kitchen and alcohol policy with the business.
