Let Hanoi have a morning, an afternoon and an evening
Start with a short circuit around Hoan Kiem rather than trying to decode the whole Old Quarter. Keep the lake as your reference point. Your first morning is for finding your bearings and learning how your hotel connects to the streets, not collecting the largest possible number of pins.
Give one day to the lake and old streets, another to the Temple of Literature and a chosen museum, and a third to Truc Bach. Returning at a different hour is not wasted time. Watching a familiar street change can tell you more than rushing to another attraction.
Getting to Hanoi and moving around
Check that your flight arrives at Noi Bai (HAN). Choose the transfer around arrival time, luggage and the entrance vehicles can reach. A short final stretch in the Old Quarter may be awkward with a suitcase; ask the hotel for its practical drop-off point before you travel.
Build walks from manageable neighbourhood sections and connect distant visits by vehicle. Use crossings, signals and safe gaps instead of assuming traffic will make way. A railway coffee photograph is not a reason to enter the tracks: respect access restrictions and stay outside the rail corridor.
Things to do in Hanoi
Northern Vietnam’s capital through lakeside mornings, narrow streets, courtyards and leisurely coffee breaks.
Hoan Kiem Lake
Use the lake to orient your first day and pair an early walk with coffee. Check separate access conditions for Ngoc Son Temple. Turtle Tower, seen from the shore, is a different structure within the lake.
Temple of Literature
Walk the courtyards slowly and spend time with the explanations of the site’s educational heritage. This is more than a gateway photograph; leave space for lunch nearby afterwards.
Imperial Citadel of Thang Long
Give the citadel its own visit. Read the map and interpretation to connect standing buildings with archaeological layers; the different parts do not all belong to one dynastic period.
Between the Old Quarter and Truc Bach
In the Old Quarter, browsing a shop or pausing near a courtyard can matter as much as completing a route. These streets are workplaces and homes as well as sightseeing spaces. Ask before photographing people; a brief exchange may become the most memorable part of the walk.
Visit Truc Bach for a slower stretch of the day, not simply another lake ticked off. Choose a section of shore and pair it with lunch and coffee. You need not complete both lakes on foot. Sometimes the best afternoon is the one spent at a table you are reluctant to leave.
Where to stay: noise is part of the address
Hoan Kiem makes central walks easy on a first visit, but an Old Quarter address does not guarantee the same sleeping conditions in every room. Check street-facing windows and recent noise comments. A good night’s rest is the invisible preparation for tomorrow’s sightseeing.
Truc Bach or the West Lake area offers a different daily setting, with more vehicle journeys to the old centre. On a three-night stay, visiting another neighbourhood for dinner may be more rewarding than moving hotels just to sample two addresses.
Hanoi at the table: leave room for tomorrow
A pho breakfast and a bun cha lunch make two different encounters with the city; save another meal for banh cuon. With bun cha, explore the grilled meat, noodles and herbs in smaller combinations rather than treating everything as one large soup. Curiosity is a good appetite, but three new dishes at every meal are unnecessary.
Treat egg coffee as a small dessert break rather than an interchangeable coffee order, remembering its egg and condensed-milk ingredients. For vegan meals, ask about stock and fish sauce as well as vegetables. A cafe’s greatest quality can be the simple pleasure of being able to sit without rushing.
Weather and budget: a rainy hour belongs to the trip
Hanoi does not have one climate setting all year. Spring and autumn can suit walking; summer heat and rain or cooler, overcast winter days change the programme. Pair indoor and outdoor visits flexibly. A rainy hour need not mean a wasted sightseeing day.
Budget meals, transfers, admission and onward northern travel separately. An inexpensive lunch followed by a long private transfer changes the day’s total. Planning a break near the places you visit can also be easier than returning across the city to the same hotel street.
How to plan the stops on your map
Our map selection: Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, Temple of Literature, Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, Truc Bach Lake, Dong Xuan Market, St Joseph Cathedral, Tran Quoc Pagoda, Hoa Lo Prison Relic, Vietnam Museum of Ethnology.
Break the lake and Old Quarter into short walks, leaving a pause after Hoa Lo Prison Relic. The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology needs a separate journey from the centre. Spread the pins across two or three days according to your interests.
After Hanoi: choose a different kind of journey
If you add Ninh Binh, give a Trang An boat outing its own day rather than treating it as an extension of a Hanoi walk. Departure, the pier, time on the water and the return each belong in the plan. A same-day return can work, but watching the landscape while worrying about the next connection differs from spending an unhurried afternoon there. Consider an overnight stay too.
For a Ha Long extension, choose the actual departure port and return arrangements before linking your Hanoi hotel. “Pick-up from Hanoi” does not mean two boats depart from the same shore or at the same time. The three days here are city days; adding the bay or Ninh Binh should not compress every Hanoi neighbourhood into a single afternoon. Keep enough room for a final lakeside coffee without watching the clock.

Treat chay as a starting point, then clarify eggs, dairy and sauces. For halal suitability, request current verification from the business.
Menus, suppliers and certifications change. If you keep strict halal, confirm the current certificate, alcohol, sauce ingredients and shared-kitchen risk directly with the restaurant.
