Returning from a Fez craft lane to a quiet riad courtyard

Planning a Morocco city itinerary

Morocco moves between souks, quiet courtyards, long meals and mountain views. Marrakech, Fez and Chefchaouen are not three copies of the same medina. One brings squares and gardens, another intricate streets and crafts, and the third slower hillside days. Let each place shape its own part of the trip.

Do not fill every gap on a first itinerary with another city. Medina navigation, riad arrivals and intercity journeys take real time. Longer stays let you enjoy evenings and quieter mornings. If a desert excursion is important, read its actual route and give it the days it needs.

Morocco travel essentials

Documents and permitted stay

Check visa eligibility and passport requirements for your nationality with official Moroccan consular sources. Another traveller’s experience does not establish your permitted stay.

MAD, bargaining and total costs

The currency is the Moroccan dirham. Agree prices and currency in markets and before services; a guide, taxi or tannery terrace visit is not necessarily free.

ONCF and CTM connections

Check ONCF for trains and CTM for intercity coaches. There is no direct train to Chefchaouen; include connections and baggage procedures in your timing.

Photography and visiting etiquette

Ask before photographing people. Access rules vary at places of worship; an open door does not automatically mean tourist access. Dress and behave considerately in residential lanes.

10–12 days

Three medinas, different rhythms

Three nights each in Marrakech and Fez, two in Chefchaouen and two flexible travel days. Choose the return airport to suit the northern leg.

Fez and the Rif foothills

Follow Fez’s craft lanes and madrasas with Chefchaouen’s smaller medina. Leave time in both instead of extending south to Marrakech.

Cities and medinas to visit in Morocco

Marrakech lies farther south than Fez and Chefchaouen. Allow time between them; Chefchaouen has no railway station and needs a coach or road transfer for the final leg.
