What is Ny-Ålesund and how do you get there?

Ny-Ålesund, on the shore of Kongsfjorden in the Svalbard archipelago, is the world's northernmost permanently inhabited settlement. Run by the company Kings Bay AS, the town hosts international polar research stations from 10 countries.

There are two ways to reach the town: special charter flights departing from Longyearbyen and landing at Ny-Ålesund Airport (Hamnerabben), or scientific/tourist boat trips along the fjord in the summer months. Independent travel is restricted; visitors must strictly comply with local regulations and conservation rules.

Radio silence and polar rules

In Ny-Ålesund, a strictly enforced 'Radio Silent Zone' rule applies within a 20-kilometre radius. To avoid disrupting sensitive atmospheric and astrophysical measurements, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and radio signals are strictly prohibited. Mobile phones must be kept in aeroplane mode.

When going beyond the town limits, an armed guide escort is mandatory because of the risk of polar bears. Leaving designated paths, disturbing local bird nesting areas and touching historical remains are prohibited by law.

Polar bear safety

More polar bears than people live in and around Ny-Ålesund. Safe walking areas are marked within the town; never cross beyond these lines unarmed.

Post office and museum

Ny-Ålesund has the world's northernmost post office. Sending a postmarked postcard from here and visiting the Kings Bay Museum are the town's most popular activities.

History and Amundsen's airship mast

In 1926, Roald Amundsen, Umberto Nobile and Lincoln Ellsworth began their historic flight across the North Pole in the airship 'Norge' from Ny-Ålesund. The steel airship mooring mast (Airship Mast) still standing in the town is one of the most valuable monuments of polar aviation history.

The wooden buildings left from the old coal-mining era have been carefully preserved and today converted into accommodation and laboratory space for international researchers.

Dietary preferences

Vegan and halal restaurants in Ny-Ålesund

For Ny-Ålesund we picked one plant-based place and one aimed at Muslim travellers. Halal labels don't all mean the same thing: certification, the restaurant's own declaration and "some halal options" are shown separately on each card.

Vegan Pick

Vegan options

Kings Bay Service Building Mess

Servicebygget · Research station canteen

The only food service, offering set-time communal meals to researchers and registered visitors staying in the settlement.

Why we picked it: In Ny-Ålesund, which has no public restaurant, vegan needs can only be planned with the kitchen in advance during accommodation registration.

Verification note

The venue's plant-based coverage was checked in the directory; reconfirm the menu and opening days before booking.

Halal Pick

Re-check recommended

Kongsfjordbutikken

Central Ny-Ålesund · Kiosk and self-catering

The settlement shop offering limited snacks and basics; it is not a restaurant or halal outlet.

Why we picked it: Without a halal food service, it's the only retail outlet where you can make a backup plan by checking labelled packaged products.

Verification note

There is no halal-certified restaurant or product guarantee. Access and stock are limited; bring certified packaged food from Longyearbyen and make a written plan with Kings Bay in advance.
